Diagnostics

The institute conducts diagnostics of the condition of construction products and structures, usually in relation to the identification and assessment of causes of failures or accidents in buildings, as well as hygienic deficiencies in buildings and others.

Within the diagnostics of structural failures, common physico-mechanical properties of materials are analyzed, such as bulk density, moisture content, compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and adhesion of layers. Material homogeneity in the investigated area is also diagnosed, for example, by measuring the speed of ultrasonic wave propagation. Long-term measurements are carried out to explore the rheological properties of materials (e.g., shrinkage of concrete, aerated concrete, or other similar moisture-responsive materials) or to determine the stress state, with simultaneous recording of temperature and relative humidity of the air. Additionally, long-term monitoring of crack development in building structures, schlerometric testing of concrete, electromagnetic determination of reinforcement arrangement in reinforced concrete structures, and radiometric determination of bulk density, moisture content, and compaction degree of aggregates (cohesive and non-cohesive soils) are performed.

A specialized field is the thermotechnical diagnostics of buildings, which involves determining:

  • Distribution of temperature fields on the surface of structures using thermographic methods.
  • Actual composition of a structure through probing methods.
  • Thermal resistance of a structure.
  • Spatial distribution of moisture within the roof structure.
  • Heat energy consumption for heating a specific dwelling unit.
  • Hourly air exchange rate in a room.
  • Occurrence of mold and dampness in perimeter structures.
  • Physical condition of residential buildings in terms of thermal protection and energy efficiency.
